emote work became a default way of working for many companies during the pandemic. Today, many businesses want their employees


back to the office and back to how things worked before. Tat might be possible in theory, but a lot has changed, too. Te technology and processes that got companies through the initial lockdown, when they ‘only’ had to support remote working, are not suitable for this more demanding environment. How can companies support more flexible and


hybrid work, and what are the potential challenges that will get in the way? As organisations move toward hybrid working models preferred by employees, what kinds of changes are best to enable remote and in-person teams to work together?

Research by ResumeBuilder found that 73 percent of companies say they will change their work location policy in the next six months. Some are trying to entice their staff back, offering additional benefits like covering commuting costs or catering. Others are more forceful, stating that they will fire staff that don’t agree to come back. Te reason for this? Microsoſt found that 85 percent of leaders aren’t confident

that employees are being productive when they work remotely. However, this is not what employees want.


Microsoſt’s research found that 73 percent of employees and 78 percent of business decision makers say they need a better reason to go into the office than just ‘company expectations.’ Tey want flexibility - according to SEMrush, search queries for remote work jumped 300 percent between July 2021 to July 2022. And they can have it - nations like Portugal, Iceland and Spain, amongst others, now offer digital nomad visas that allow workers to move and work there for a year.


As much as leaders aren’t confident in employees, employees are


confident they can deliver in a hybrid or fully remote environment. Microsoſt found that 87 percent of employees report they are productive at work when they can be flexible in their approach. Tat mismatch is frequently based on the out-of-sight, out-of-mind problem that managers frequently experience. As the Society for Human Resource documents, intentionality – and not caprice – make for the best policy when it comes to programming your workforce’s time in the office.
