Search a cycling consumer magazine in recent months and a hot topic of debate has been: Is gravel here to stay? Or is it another phase? In this edition of BikeBiz, we take a look at multiple avenues of the gravel and adventure discipline to gain an understanding of what makes it such an attractive proposition – especially for the UK market. Freelance writer Rebecca Bland has spoken to the Charlotte Inman, UK founder of the Sisters in the Wild event (P7). As one of the most prominent gravel and bikepacking focused groups open to women, trans, and non-binary people, Inman is well placed to comment on what is making it more than just a craze. Continuing with the gravel trend, I catch up with BikeBiz Award winner, Reilly Cycleworks (P24), to preview the 2024 range and discuss opportunities for dealers, Simon Cox speaks to Col Williams of Restrap (P46) and there’s a 5 mins with Challenge Tires (P50). Our sector guides also showcase a wealth of bikes and accessories from some the best-know brands in the space (P59). Elsewhere in the mag, Rebecca Morley takes a look at the state of play in the shared e-scooter market (P34) I sit down with Fabian Hamilton MP, of the APPGCW, to talk about road justice (P37).
The Bicycle Association’s latest set of data highlighted the lowest sales of mechanical bicycles for more than a century. Gravel bikes bucked the trend with an 11% increase when compared to 2022’s figures. When you look at the success of events such as Dirty Reiver, Grinduro, Lauf Gritfest and
the like, it’s clear to see why. Here’s hoping the upward trend continues and there is a bright future for those looking to go off the beaten track.
