OPINION
PHOTO BY STELIOS GHOUVALIAS ON UNSPLASH We hope too that it will in future mean less paranoid
treatment for your customers when it comes to access restrictions for their e-bikes to premises, for example. We’re working with the insurance industry to gain their endorsement and engagement, so that they can properly reflect in policies and access restrictions the very low risk of reputable e-bike brands, sourced from responsible retailers. Government recognition and endorsement of this scheme will also be helpful, and we’ve already had some very promising discussions at Ministerial level. But it is also important to manage expectations. This will be no silver bullet when it comes to, for example, reversing the ban on non-folding e-bikes on Transport for London’s networks.
And to be clear, our initiative is a brand-level assurance scheme and will not involve marking or labelling of individual e-bikes. The brand is the simplest and most recognisable indicator of a reputable e-bike. It is a simple process to check an e-bike’s brand against the Register. This

secure online listing will be the definitive source of truth for which e-bike brands are listed as having been approved by our audit.
In contrast, labels can be so easily copied (even relatively sophisticated ones) that applying labels immediately risks less reputable bikes with copied/ faked labels undermining the scheme’s credibility.
We, as the UK e-bike industry, need something simple, clear and in place ASAP, to distance our reputable products from the unsafe ones. That’s why we are building a fast, cost-effective and
credible brand-level scheme which, in the near future will, we believe, provide a clear signpost to our industry’s safe, road-legal and reputable e-bikes and, alongside the ACT- led Pledge, to the retailers where these can be purchased and maintained. If you manage an e-bike brand, we’d urge you to join the
BA and join the audit queue ASAP, so that your brand is in the very first batch of safety-audited e-bike brands to be flagged to consumers when we launch to the public next year.
