“Tectonic shift” in employment law threatens independent retailer viability, warns Bira podcast

Independent retailers are facing a “generational” transformation of employment law that could fundamentally change how small businesses   Legal experts warn that upcoming changes

Gerry O’Hare, Legal Director at WorkNest — and long-standing partner for Bira in providing support to members in Employment Law, HR, and Health & Safety said: “The UK employment law landscape is going to undergo a tectonic shift over the next two years. Employers are basically staring down the barrel of generational changes, so it’s going to be more important than ever for them to try and stay ahead of the curve.”

The changes include day one rights not to be unfairly dismissed, reforms to zero hours contracts, statutory sick pay from day one, and stronger duties to prevent sexual harassment in the workplace.

Bira CEO Andrew Goodacre, added: “Most of the changes don’t happen until 2026, and that gives us the opportunity as an association representing independent retailers to keep this conversation going with the Department for Business and keep talking to policy makers about the unintended consequences we see.

“I would urge all independent retailers to reach out to their local MP and express concerns about changes that they see coming. We already know the government may change its view on winter fuel payments because of what it’s hearing from local MPs talking to constituents. We need to get this message across that too much, too soon, is asking too much of small independent retailers.”

RSM Domestic Appliances gives back with community support scheme

This initiative emerged as a natural extension of RSM’s dedication to delivering high personal customer satisfaction as specialists in home appliance retail and repair services. Since its inception over eight years ago, the Community Support Scheme has made a donation every month. In addition, it helps individuals and organisations through the supply of home appliances,

repairs and servicing, or monetary donations. The scheme works collaboratively with charity partners  where possible. Some of those supported include: Foodbanks, Hospices and Besom to name just a few. Most recently, RSM owner Steve Haydon was delighted to present a donation of 10 x Kettles and 10 x Toasters to The Besom Network in Woking recently. Besom will distribute these to families where a few home comforts are much needed.  our loyal customers and give back to our local community.
