Life LIFE OF CARE
Over a decade of caring: Maddy Alemayehu, owner of Home Instead in Hammersmith and Chiswick
M
addy Alemayehu opened her Home Instead franchise in Hammersmith and Chiswick in 2011, having worked as a critical care nurse for 10 years. In this role,
she regularly saw older people struggle to transition from hospital care back to their homes without adequate support, and had a genuine desire to care for the elderly and help them live independently in their own homes. Maddy comments: “My move into Home Instead
was inspired by my professional experience, seeing the real impact of genuine bonds, care and friendship on a patient’s health. I felt there was a lack of person-centred care, which inspired me to launch Home Instead, allowing me to empower both the elderly and their families through quality care, making a real difference.” And Maddy has truly embraced the Home Instead
model and all the partnerships, innovations and services that they provide to their franchise network. Even amongst the challenges faced by the care
sector during the pandemic, Maddy’s business grew by 40%. She has steamed ahead, constantly developing and growing her franchise, whilst expanding her services – spurred on by her passion to help others. Over the past 12 months, Maddy has launched
live-in care services, providing 24/7 support. Huge demand for this service means that Home Instead Hammersmith & Chiswick now has a high number of live-in care clients, and is one of the top providers of live-in care across the Home Instead network. Maddy was also one of the early adopters of specialist dementia home care, and it didn’t take long for her to become the go-to provider for dementia care in her area. She even became a partner of Dementia UK, a charity she is passionate about. In early 2021, when the country was in full
lockdown, Maddy was determined to continue delivering dementia workshops and keep that momentum going. The workshops went online, receiving high attendance numbers, which enabled Maddy to continue raising awareness of dementia and spreading that all-important
message that each one of us can help. It's safe to say that Maddy’s passion for raising
awareness and understanding of dementia has rubbed off onto her team. There are now four dementia champions at Home Instead Hammersmith & Chiswick who promote this specialist care to the community. Maddy continues: “Running my own business is an amazing way to follow my passion and really make a difference, but it also allows me to control my work-life balance and spend as much time as I can with my daughter. Outside of work, she is everything to me and I spend as much time with her as possible. “I love that our work brings peace of mind to
families, ensuring their loved ones are safe, well cared for and always connected with their carers on a more meaningful, personal level.” l
