e’re big fans of the artist Rihanna here at the bfa. As far as setting standards go, the singer, actress and entrepreneur is at the top of her game, and that’s
something I feel we can all aspire to. Standards have always been at the very heart of everything we do here at the bfa. We were founded in 1977, when the world was a very different place. For a start, it was Fleetwood Mac in the charts, Star Wars at the cinema, and the worldwide web was still 12 years from being invented! Franchising was very different back then too.
The term was unfamiliar to most, and covered a large number of different concepts. Although this remains the case to an extent, most people now understand that there is a huge difference between ‘business format franchising’, and licensing, for example. For those not familiar with the term, the concept of business format franchising is simple, where one party (the franchisor) grants another (the franchisee) the license to run the franchisor’s proven business model in a designated territory. The franchisee will pay an initial fee for the franchise which includes the training and equipment to set up and run the franchise business. One of the benefits of franchising, for a franchisee, is that they will have the opportunity to sell their business should they decide to, and in partnership with the franchisor

How the bfa is raising and holding standards and why that’s good for the franchise industry
can agree to sell, therefore benefitting from a return on their investment The bfa came about in the '70s through a need
for standards to be set and adhered to, within the industry. Self-appointed and not for profit, we wrote the book on standards within franchising in the UK (literally, as a key representative at the European Franchise Federation, the bfa owns an extension to the code that is developed and enforced in collaboration with industry experts for the bfa and its members).
"More than just a badge, bfa accreditation acts as a gold standard of quality, integrity, and ethical business operations"
As we continue to evolve, we maintain
our rigorous standards. Our members are proud to be bfa accredited. More than just a badge, bfa accreditation acts as a gold standard of quality, integrity, and ethical business operations. We know that there is more to us now than just standards, but it will always remain at the very core of who we are and that’s not something we ever intend to change… as Rihanna puts it: “Don’t lower your standards for anything, or anyone.”
