Franchise Focus A world of opportunity
Franchisee Kavan Tankard found the perfect fi t for him with TaxAssist Accountants
INVESTMENT LEVEL: FROM £36,950 ‘W
hat a fantastic opportunity!’ was the thought running through Kavan Tankard’s mind
when his then-employer mentioned that his successful TaxAssist Accountants franchise was up for sale, as he planned to retire, and that Kavan might consider buying it.
It was 2010, when Kavan was 28 and had been working in the Halifax-based TaxAssist shop for three years, learning the ropes as he went and developing his knowledge of franchising and how TaxAssist supported its franchisees. “I have always worked in accountancy practices,” explains Kavan. “I obtained my Association of Accounting Technicians qualifi cation and worked my way up from offi ce junior to senior accounts manager and fi nally senior practice manager at TaxAssist. The former franchisee, Ray Millin, could see that I was ambitious and, together, we realised that despite only being 28, I was more than capable of running the business myself. I absolutely love the mix of meeting with new and existing clients, carrying out and checking work and managing my team of staff .” TaxAssist Accountants is the
UK’s largest network of accountants specialising in servicing the needs of small businesses. Franchisees operate from modern, accessible and non- intimidating shops, designed specifi cally to appeal to the small-business client. By concentrating on just small businesses, work is kept relatively simple, giving the added security that in operating with 400 to 500 small-business clients, each with a modest average annual fee, if one client leaves, the risk to the overall business is negligible. “Although I was relatively young when I bought the franchise, I knew I had the confi dence and belief in myself to make a go of it,” adds Kavan. “The practice I bought was already successful. I liked the business model, and I knew that with the excellent technical and marketing support off ered by TaxAssist for myself and my staff , I could continue to expand. “When I took the business on, there were 200 clients. That fi gure is now 400,

and with time on my side, I’d like to think I can double it again.
“In 2017, I made the decision, along with my wife Emma and team of fi ve, that the time was right to expand with a second shop in Wibsey in Bradford. With the business going from strength to strength in Halifax and a growing small- business culture in and around Bradford, it seemed like the perfect time to look out for a new conveniently placed shop on the outskirts of the city. With the advent of new technology and Making Tax Digital on the horizon, I see many opportunities for growth ahead.” TaxAssist Accountants is looking to expand its network of over 200 franchises with accountants or fi nance professionals with the drive and ambition to work for themselves. Franchisees can employ staff to carry out their clients’ work, leaving them free to network, market, meet with clients and manage and build their practice. Many mature practices operate so effi ciently that franchisees
can have a relatively light touch in the day- to-day running of the business. Kavan concludes: “I would encourage anyone to consider a franchise. I am fortunate that I’ve found the perfect fi t for me. The banks were happy to lend to me based on my business plan and now, at 36, I am my own boss with a business I can take a good income from and which is also a great asset for my future.” If you are interested in fi nding out
more about the TaxAssist Accountants franchise, the next step would be to attend a discovery day at the support centre in Norwich, where you will have the chance to meet with one or more of the directors of the franchise.
