Franchise Focus Partners in care

Couples are making a success with their Caremark franchises

INVESTMENT LEVEL: FROM £100,000 H

ave you ever thought about going into business with your spouse or partner? Working together can be very fulfi lling, particularly when you are

aiming towards a common objective and have a shared goal.

While some couples would prefer to maintain a distinction between work and home life making this idea a non-starter, those working together in a franchise

Richard and Emily Magrath

would not necessarily be side by side in the same room for eight hours a day, doing the same work.

When it comes to franchising, a variety

of diff erent skillsets is desirable, so there are often opportunities for distinct roles. People skills, fi nancial awareness and administrative capabilities all have a part to play in contributing to the overall picture and, in fact, individual strengths can complement each other. Caremark’s franchise works well for couples, as it requires a breadth of skills – which two people often bring as a pair. There are a number of successful partnerships in the network, with franchisees coming from backgrounds across the professional spectrum, not just the care sector. Working together does not mean that family life has to suff er either. Richard and Emily Magrath have a franchise in Northern Ireland. To balance the challenges of

running their own business, the couple make sure they spend time together as a family. They live fi ve minutes from their offi ce, which is also an advantage. Emily explains: “Our day starts at home getting our three boys sorted for school. Every day in the offi ce is diff erent, but busy. Our offi ce hours are 9.00am to 5.30pm, but one of us is always home for the kids.” As with all business relationships, there will be ups and downs but when it comes to couples working together, the element of trust and mutual cooperation is already there, which is not always the case with business partners who are not related. Certainly many couples can and do work successfully and harmoniously together in running a franchise and, in some cases, manage the challenges of a demanding business regime and raising a family. The key ingredients are a can-do attitude, ambition and sharing the vision of a great future for whichever franchise you, as a couple, choose.
