Market Focus Chris Brown
Michael Folkes Caremark
How did you find out about franchising and the Caremark opportunity? I was aware of Caremark having seen my father launch and develop his own very successful franchise. I knew if I was going to take on another business, I would ideally want it to be a franchise, as I like the combination of running a business with the backing and support of a larger group. It had to be a business that I could grow and develop, and I wanted to work in a sector that I could see myself enjoying, plus it had to be in a sustainable marketplace. Caremark ticked all the boxes.
How was the process of becoming a franchisee? Very straightforward. I called head office and spoke with the franchise recruitment manager and soon had all the important information I needed to evaluate. We met soon after to further explore the business opportunity and this was very informative and clear. They were satisfied I was the right fit for the network and met all their criteria.

How much support and training did you receive?
I underwent an intensive two-week initial training programme at head office, which was really comprehensive. Now, I have access to ongoing skilled support from my regional development manager, as well as the knowledge and experience of the support team at head office.
What’s the best thing about being involved in the care industry? Working with the team without a doubt. We already have an amazing team of people who go out every day to look after
Michael started his Caremark franchise in Cheltenham and Tewkesbury in April 2017, but began his franchising life at the age of 24 when he worked with his father, Charles, in their Rainbow International franchise. He lives with his wife and three young children in Gloucestershire.
our vulnerable clients. I also find the sector very rewarding, as most days I hear about a client and the relationship our care team have built with them. We have even been sent cakes from our first client, which was such a lovely gesture!
How has your life changed since you started your Caremark franchise? I was driving 50,000 miles per year and not spending much time with my family. I now work six miles from the office, so my work- life balance has greatly improved.
Do you have any advice for would-be franchisees?
Spend lots of time planning and keep your costs as low as possible while you’re in setup mode. Make sure you are meticulous in appointing a care manager. You may feel pressure to get one in quickly, but interview as many as possible. There are no guarantees you will get it right, but it’s worth the time spent in looking for the best possible candidate.
