Personality match

ave you ever completed a personality test? I must confess to finding the online versions highly addictive – if not all that revealing in the

end. (I mean, who knew I was a loud and sarcastic attention-seeker? NOT ME!) Such tests, though, appeal to us because they promise the answers to a complex set of questions: What am I good at? Who do I get along with? How will I achieve success in life/love/work? The conclusions drawn by personality testing are also comforting since they allow us to cling to labels and behaviours: “I’m an introvert/extrovert/extreme empath/chronic oversharer and so have a pathological tendency to do X or Y” or in other words, “I can’t help it, it’s just the way I am”. (To be fair, on most days, I can be all of the above, as anyone forced to spend time with me would tell you.) The more prosaic truth is that the majority of us are a combination of types and possess a range of skills and qualities. Recruiters use this form of test to gauge whether the candidate in front of them will be a good fit for a role or company. While no fixed personality type makes a successful franchisee, there are certain qualities it’s good to embody, and these desirable traits – and why they’re useful – are outlined on pages 18 and 19.

It’s no surprise that, as the late, great Roy Castle said, ‘dedication’s what you need’. If your character type is predisposed to caring for and about others, there’s an in-depth look at the world of health and elderly care – a massive growth market, with investment opportunities aplenty. Turn to page 24 to read all about those who have forged a new career in care. Now, while I’m sure you’re beautiful inside and out, you’ll need more than just a dazzling personality to get your franchise journey under way. Luckily, there’s The National Franchise Exhibition (on 16 and 17 February at Birmingham’s NEC) that has everything you could possibly need to start you off. With not only tons of franchise opportunities, but also presentations, workshops, seminars and advisers on hand, there’s no enquiry about franchising that can’t be answered here! Check out pages 33 to 50 for the exhibition Show Guide – we look forward to seeing you there…
