Franchise Focus A slice of the action

Opening a second Papa John’s store is just the start for franchisee Umar Malik

INVESTMENT LEVEL: FROM £70,000* L

eading pizza franchise Papa John’s has announced franchisee Umar Malik has delivered on his promise to open a second Newport store

following strong customer demand. Umar, who now runs 10 franchised Papa John’s across South Wales, has created 30 full- and part-time jobs at the new outlet, which is based on Chepstow Road. Umar says: “We now have the whole city covered. Our original Cardiff Road Papa John’s, which looks after the east side of Newport, was quick to taste success and so a second outlet was needed to deliver to residents living west of the river Usk.

“Having two Papa John’s close together has made training the new staff straightforward. They have been able to gain hands-on experience in the other store prior to opening, ensuring the focus is

on quality and great customer service from day one.” The Papa John’s concept of ‘better

ingredients, better pizza’ continues to prove popular; there are now more than 350 Papa John’s in the UK and over 5,000 stores in over 40 international markets. Umar fi rst discovered his passion for pizza while completing an MBA at Carlisle. He worked as a delivery driver for two rival fi rms as a student and used to dream about owning his own pizza outlet. He says: “Then I found Papa John’s. I funded my fi rst Papa John’s in Swansea through savings plus a business loan from HSBC. The rest is history.

“Over the years, the Papa John’s team have been particularly supportive. The company has a franchisee incentive scheme designed to help franchisees opening up new stores. This off ers a few key ingredients, including some free

equipment, reduction in royalty fees and assistance with marketing. It means the focus can be on operations in those fi rst few critical months of opening. “As the company continues to grow and serve up a top-quality off ering, there will be many more opportunities to satisfy customer demand through opening more stores.”
