Franchise Focus A healthy opportunity

There’s never been a better time to become a partner of Anytime Fitness, a thriving, world-leading franchise

INVESTMENT LEVEL: FROM £110,000 I

f you dream of ditching the daily grind and becoming your own boss, recent fi gures suggest that owning a franchise within the fi tness industry could be a great opportunity.

According to the 2016 State of the UK Fitness Industry Report, the UK health and fi tness industry is continuing to grow, with more clubs, members and a greater market value than ever before. During 2016, the industry experienced another year of impressive growth with increases of 5.3 per cent to the number of members and 3.2 per cent in market value. Now exceeding nine million members, penetration is also at an all-time high of 14.3 per cent, meaning that one in every seven people in the UK is now a member of a gym.

When it comes to taking the plunge,

many fi nd the reality of setting up a business a little bit risky. The ideal scenario would be to skip the trial and error stages and jump in at the point where there is a smooth-running, well-loved brand and a team of experts on hand providing support when needed. The key to operating a successful franchise is choosing the right company.

Anytime Fitness was ranked the number- one global franchise for two consecutive years by Entrepreneur magazine. It’s a healthy option in the rapidly growing health and fi tness industry, which, in the UK alone, turns over £4.4billion, showing growth year on year.

The Anytime Fitness franchise also appears unstoppable. Founded by Chuck Runyon and Dave Mortensen in Minnesota in 2002, it’s the fastest-growing fi tness franchise in the world and one of the fastest-growing companies full stop. Taking just 13 years to reach 3,000 sites, Anytime Fitness now has more than 3,500 health and fi tness clubs in 29 countries, which are enjoyed by over three million members. The company is looking for new partners to open clubs and help grow the business in the UK. With 120 clubs currently trading in the country, Anytime Fitness aims to be the UK’s largest gym operator in 2017, with plans to have 200 clubs open by the end of the year. Over the company’s 20-year history, franchisees have chalked up a 99 per cent success rate in the UK, proving

that, if you do want to be your own boss, there are many defi nite advantages to investing in a global brand with a proven business model. Linda Crowson, Anytime Fitness franchisee for Twickenham, says: “The biggest benefi t for me is the lifestyle, but it’s just as important that this is a business that works. If you follow the model then you end up having something that is profi table within a short period of time.” So what’s required? Opening an Anytime Fitness club requires a minimum investment of £110,000 liquid capital, which represents 30 per cent of the total investment. The remaining 70 per cent is available to Anytime Fitness franchisees from two major high-street banks. The company projects a 100 per cent return on investment within 18 months. In the UK, Anytime Fitness clubs have an average of 1,200 members and are typically cash positive at 650 members

between six to eight months after opening. Interestingly, a background in health and fi tness is not required – the vast majority of franchisees come from outside the industry, and most employ a local manager to take on day-to-day responsibility for managing the club.

The expertise and support of the central team is also a huge benefi t, allowing franchisees to feel confi dent in each step of the process. With comprehensive training and customised ongoing support from dedicated franchise consultants, it’s easy to see why 60 per cent of franchisees have gone on to own another club.
