Spotlight Franchise
Introducing… I
n 2007, following a period of successfully operating a ‘traditional’ gym, Matthias and Emma Lehner set up Bodystreet in their home city of Munich. Originally, the concept was to sell sports clothing. However, when the couple introduced an electro muscle stimulation (EMS) training unit into their business, they realised what Bodystreet could offer their clients. By 2009 Bodystreet had begun to offer franchises; growth in Germany was very quick. By 2012 100 studios were open and trading throughout Germany, and just two years later the 200th studio opened and international expansion began, with studios opening in Switzerland and Austria. Today, there are over 240 Bodystreet studios, including those in the UK, Italy and, shortly, in the US.
EMS has been used in the sports, arts and space industry for decades, and is a safe and effective way of stimulating a person’s muscles to operate and ‘train’ in the same way that they would conventionally. However, because the workout places no stress on the body’s joints or ligaments, the result is two or three times more effective than a conventional programme. Bodystreet operates in small fitness studios that are in good footfall areas in highly visible premises. Each studio employs instructors who train clients using the Bodystreet system, incorporating EMS. Because EMS training is so effective, clients need only train once a week, making Bodystreet appealing as it is
not time consuming and is highly cost effective.
Why is Bodystreet so effective? Everyone knows that keeping fit is important. Our lives, however, with the advent of technology, seem to have become busier and busier. A recent survey asking why respondents did not train regularly found that 52 per cent stated that lack of time was the number-one reason stopping regular exercise. Being busy isn’t the only problem.
Working patterns are also a cause for concern. A report published in The Lancet stated that office workers are just as likely to die a premature death as smokers, due to sedentary work styles. Being able to visit a Bodystreet studio once a week and get an effective whole- body workout in just 20 minutes fits into anyone’s schedule. Bodystreet’s team is highly trained to be able to work with just about anyone to help them achieve their fitness goals.
How does a Bodystreet workout work? EMS technology is being used by many world-renowned sportspeople and athletes to help with their training and recovery programmes. EMS stimulates the type II muscles to contract and relax independently of ligaments or joints. The type II – fast-twitch muscles – are those muscles that are developed for strength, power and speed – the ones that give definition to our bodies.

…Bodystreet, an innovative franchise and an exciting way to get fit
Bodystreet’s perfected routine means clients will burn between 400 and 600 calories in just one 20-minute workout and a further 1,500 to 2,000 calories in the following 24 hours.
Does Bodystreet work? Bodystreet has been operating for almost 10 years and has over 36,000 members across the studio network. Some 150,000 training sessions are delivered every month with a weekly utilisation rate of about 85 per cent. Almost all members attend a session every week – compare this figure with the average gym member. Bodystreet’s membership renewal rate
is more than 80 per cent. The average Bodystreet studio has 60 per cent more members than a comparable EMS studio and there are over twice as many Bodystreet studios in Germany than any other operator.
Bodystreet in the UK Bodystreet is just starting here in the UK but the signs are good. Milton Keynes already has over 100 members and the latest studios in Bristol and Swansea show strong growth. The company’s focus is to work with like-minded people who see the value in Bodystreet, not just the financial incomes, to bring an effective solution to improve the health and wellbeing of people in the local community.
