It’s all thanks to George Bebbington, who, in 1968, came up with the principal of permanently changing the colour of masonry using a brush-applied dye. George was working as a clay technologist in Staff ordshire and was one of Europe’s leading consultants in the industry.
Tinting today is the industry-wide accepted practice for masonry colour remediation and restoration. Prior to George Bebbington’s development, staining or colouring brick had been a haphazard business. Many weird and wonderful combinations have been tried, including cow muck, soot, urine, linseed and yoghurt. None of them were permanent or off ered any control over the fi nal colour.
Bebbingtons has developed permanent tints that are colour-fast and breathable, both important matters when it comes to the warranty of building materials. Since the recession, many brick types
are no longer available, making brick matching for extensions, renovations and restoration more diffi cult. However, with brick and masonry tinting, homeowners and property developers can have a perfect match for their masonry.
