After receiving enthusiastic feedback on the first edition of the Barcelona Hat Days event, which brought the hat community together with a programme of activities in 2023, it was inevitable that a second edition would follow. Although last year’s event was organised under the auspices of the Spanish Millinery Association, this year they had shifted their focus to activities in other parts of Spain. Consequently, organiser Cristina de Prada took it upon herself to continue the tradition.

“Initially, a new venue had to be found after last year’s location closed,” said Cristina. “I was uncertain about continuing the Hat Days until I discovered Talento Studio, nestled in the beautiful Sarrià area of Barcelona. The venue is smaller than its predecessor but ideal; not only could it accommodate the market, it also included a workshop space. Presentation prize at the Feltmakers Design Award competition in 2023 with a felt hat, her primary specialty and preference lie in working with straw braid. “One of my hats, a straw beret adorned with silk abaca flowers, was displayed at the Barcelona Hat Days exhibition last year. Although my hat was there, I was not, which motivated me to make sure I attended this year,” Paula said, explaining her decision to attend the event. “I’ve been eager to learn how to make my own hat blocks using cork, so when I heard that Cristina de Prada would be

teaching this technique at Barcelona Hat Days, I knew for sure I had to be there. I participated in Cristina’s workshop yesterday and bought a cork sheet today to take back to Finland. I plan to cut it in half to fit it into my suitcase, but that’s fine as it will be used to make smaller blocks. Although I already own several hat blocks, I lack any for fascinators. My first project is probably going to be the creation of a headband block as demonstrated by Cristina.”
