Finding inspiration from classic films and drama


Get the popcorn ready. We are about to embark on a trip down someone else’s memory lane, just like on Saturday afternoons of old, to the movies. This is the second of four articles looking at where you can go in a quest for inspiration. As has been said before, perhaps not in so many words, copying is not always the highest praise.

Originality is often brushed aside in developing collections. Especially when it is often said that there is nothing new under the sun. But a quick eye and a deft hand can help seize the moment so that an idea becomes reality. Here, we hit on some points that hopefully help, delight and stimulate those little grey cells of the imagination.


As designers, it is often a flight of fancy that takes us on a ride to Neverland. In today’s fast-paced visually stimulated world, relaxing in your pyjamas and woolly socks is not the worst way to do research. Homework lies ahead but it is nothing short of delightful. We are going to look at the world of hats through the cinematographer’s eye. Our list of films is particular in their point of view: hat-related, hat- oriented and hat-invoking.
