Leather industry One of the main themes for the Spring/Summer 25 season was mutation, signifying a major transformation underway across various industries and societies. For instance, the leather industry, historically known for its significant pollution, is evolving to address environmental and social concerns, consumer expectations, and regulatory demands. After years of ecological transition, tanners are integrating into their core ethos a commitment to responsible innovation, adaptability to a turbulent economic climate, and the liberating force of creativity.
Moving beyond traceability that begins at the slaughterhouse, tanners are now ensuring the traceability of hides at the unit level, increasingly opting for farm-level traceability. This effort is aimed at guaranteeing breeding conditions and confirming the absence of any connection with deforestation. This essential metamorphosis is underway to tackle future challenges effectively.
Pelinova
Recycled leather
During the fashion talks at the February 2024 edition of Première Vision, another initiative within the leather industry was spotlighted: recycled leather. Every year, 800,000 tons of leather waste from the manufacturing of leather goods end up in landfills. Pelinova has taken with their product Recyc Leather on the mission to repurpose leather offcuts from gardening gloves by recycling it into new products. The waste material from the gloves is sorted and then shredded into fine leather fibres. The shredded material is mixed with natural rubber and compressed into a new material using a binding machine. This new material is enhanced with a coating and texture, succesfully finding applications across various industries, including fashion.
