Making the headband and supports


In Issue 98 and Issue 100 you can find instructions on how to make the headband. Position the G shapes onto the headband you have made.


At this point you can use any decoration for your hat.

Making the crinoline frill I used a piece of crinoline and finished the edges by heat sealing. The crinoline was then joined and sewn onto a length of 0.8 mm wire covered in a crinoline 2.5 mm tube with some extra covered wire on each end. I flattened the edge of the crinoline fold by ironing. I then sewed the wire around the top of the shape and used the last few cm’s of the wire to follow the shape of the pattern of the straw. Measurements used are as desired.

Making a folded-over gathered crinoline Fold over the two sewn-edged halves of the crinoline. Lock one end of the threads with a figure of 8 wind onto a pin. Then sew the two edges together, checking as you go that


the two ends match and are gathered evenly. Make sure that you don’t catch the gathering thread as you will need this to pull the crinoline. I have used a veil gathering and wire sewing stitch as explained in Issue 100.

Wiring the gathered crinoline Starting from the middle of the crinoline and wire, sew the wire to the end of the crinoline point (leaving 19.5 cm extra each end) and repeat on the other half of the wire. If you would like a slight wave on the crinoline, then gather the crinoline as you sew.
