Editor’s letter #101 | May 2024

After the publication of our bumper Issue No. 100, complete with its celebratory giveaways following a prize draw, it’s back to business as usual. That said, we have another edition packed with news, inspiration and practical information ready for you! Many people who have just made their first few hats dream about starting their own business. But is this always the best choice? Perhaps your making skills far exceed your designing abilities. If so, you can still create beautiful hat designs that will be worn by the rich and famous by working freelance for other hat designers. Harvy Santos and Edwina Ibbotson explore this subject from different perspectives in the article ‘Freelance perspectives’. In this issue, you will also find details about the latest trends in headwear and fabrics as showcased at trade shows, as well as updates on what’s new in hat-making supplies. Several supply experts share their insights on popular colours, sustainability, and new or reinvented familiar materials, so helping you know what to look out for. But what about headwear and materials that have never been sold and are unlikely to be sold in the near future due to a lack of demand? While the fashion industry may rightly be scrutinised for dumping vast amounts of unsold clothing in landfills, milliners are known for ‘never’ throwing anything away. In the ‘Not quite dead stock’ article, you can learn from the stories of several businesses in the millinery industry about their approaches to extending the lifecycle of these so-called ‘dead’ stocks.
