TECHNIQUES

13

Marking the shape with guidelines Make sure that you mark the main shape with tacking lines that show your front back and over the ears. This is needed to help centre the shape properly.

14

Cutting the shape out Cut the shape from the main felt frame using sharp scissors. If you use a knife, protect the block.

15

Fitting your new shape in the space made Fit the insert to the inside of the cut shape and line up with your centre marks.

16

Joining the insert to band (a) Join the insert and cut-out bandeau with a tack tie stitch connecting both sides of the felt. This should be done at eight points: North, South, East, West, and in between each.

Tip! If you find that there

is a discrepancy with the length of the insert and the space you have left, you

can either sand down the felt to fit or stretch the felt to fit.

17

Joining the insert to band (b) Sew the insert from the centre top mark to the centre bottom mark using the same stitch. When you have reached the bottom, start again from the top, sewing the insert into the other side.

18

Re-blocking the felt Re-block the bandeau again, steaming if necessary. If you have done the sizing right, this should fit perfectly. Any discrepancies can be eased and moved.

19

Lining the bandeau With my bandeau I have fitted a different lining. On the underside, instead of a lush sateen lining, I have used a simple tarlatan fitted lining to go in under the petersham ribbon.
