Foreword #95 | November 2022

Even when we know it is inevitable, the news itself can still come unexpectedly and as a shock. On 8 September last, we heard the announcement of Queen Elizabeth II’s passing. This also marked the end of her 70-year reign as Head of the Commonwealth. During the course of her 96 years, Queen Elizabeth not only made an impact on world history, she was also a major influence on the hat industry. In this issue, we take a moment to admire some of the designs from her collection of hats, carefully acquired over the years.

After a long hot summer, the weather has changed overnight at the end of September (as I write this foreword). This will have us all contemplating more wintry material in no time at all. What better than felt? A good time to have a closer look at this versatile material. Besides its warm, protective and durable properties, felt is a beautiful material to work with and comfortable to wear – something which has been known for centuries. In our felt special feature on page 45, you will not only find out more about the production and processing of felt, you will also get a glimpse into the factories of three different felt manufacturers, based in France, Portugal and the Czech Republic. To complement this, Denise Innes-Spencer shares some additional felting tips in her regular materials section.
