Managing stress

relaxation and focusing on

Judith began her millinery career making hand-dyed and braided raffia hats and taught the craft at wearable art shows around the US. Her millinery supplier business Judith M Millinery Supply House came to life in 1994, passing to new owners at the beginning of 2021. Judith continues to support conferences and contests, believing it furthers all millinery business when the tradition is affirmed through these events.

Do the pressures of your millinery career build up throughout the day? Are you finding it difficult to switch off when that day ends? Is it impossible to find time to do something that helps you chill out? You are not alone. A common complaint for the self-employed is finding time for the self. Deadlines loom. The client’s hat must be ready for the event. Supplies need to be ordered. Social media awaits. When is there time for you and your needs? There is no magic in finding time for yourself. You simply must make time. As the end of the year approaches,

let’s look back and reflect on our ‘selves’, how we have handled stress, and how relaxed we are at this moment. If, like me, you feel lacking in some way – even when the day brought success on many levels – that is stress. You know the feeling. Projects

were completed and sales were great, but you are unable to detach from things that were unfinished or did not go as well as you had hoped. Your body feels tired from the top down.

Stop, close your eyes, take a deep breath and exhale slowly. Let it go. Recognise that this is a moment for you.

Next, go a step further and think about how to avoid this mental and physical exhaustion in the future and to give yourself much-needed rest. Set limits for yourself and consider sharing the load. Working alone, it’s simply impossible to avoid all parts of the job. Work is always there, beckoning to be done. Ask yourself: How could I handle it differently? What can I do to accomplish the task without this same stressful feeling? Can I alter my schedule to perform nerve-wracking tasks at a different time of day to alleviate some of the stress? Could I hire some things out without hurting my bottom line? Could I seek collaboration with a peer, sharing responsibility for the jobs that I find stressful, in an equitable exchange of skills or tasks? Reach out to your support
