by Elly Stemerdink The trade fairs

Each of the trade shows we visited, FASHN ROOMS in Düsseldorf and Who’s Next and Première Classe in Paris, had more exhibitors as well as visitors than in the previous few years. With restrictions completely lifted and a long and hot summer behind us, most brands mentioned that they had experienced a successful S/S 2022 season with a fair amount of backorders. At Première Classe, hat brands from the US and the UK, such as Jennifer Ouellette, Lola Hats and Misa Harada, had returned to Paris for the first time since the start of the pandemic. Also buyers from Asia were coming over for this trade show again.

The trends

The bright and vivid colours that could be spotted in the A/W 22/23 collections will continue for next summer. Besides, natural straw colours are a main tint as

all brands focus on natural materials mostly. With prices for classic straws – straw braid, Panama, parasisal – still rising, alternative materials such as raffia and paper are becoming more important in all collections. Fedora-style hats and wider brims were well represented, as well as the bucket hat, which seems to have kept its momentum – possibly at the cost of caps, which were less prominent than in previous years. Occasionwear has returned in the collections of many exhibitors and has been selling well. Besides specific occasionwear, many brands offered models that could be best described as in between occasion and casual, which is perhaps a result of the comfortable trend that became big during the pandemic and is still with us.
