Hattember 2022
Each September, the annual Hattember competition in aid of the John Skipper Kelly fund in Australia challenges milliners to push their creative boundaries. In each of the three categories this year – Millinery, Novice Millinery and Modern Revival – Hatters Millinery Supplies sent a curated bag of materials for entrants to create a hat or headpiece using at least some part of each of the items provided. The organisers in Sydney
received over 60 entries from countries including Romania, Sweden, the UK and the US, as well as from all the states of Australia. This year’s judges included renowned milliner Neil Grigg, head of the Fashion Design Studio at Ultimo TAFE Andrea Cainero, head milliner at Opera Australia

Rebecca Read, and award-winning milliner Cynthia Jones-Bryson. Hattember founder Catherine Kelly said: “The standard of entries made it extremely difficult to crown a winner, with the judging criteria covering a mixture of design, skill, expertise, fit, creative use of materials, and originality. From a humble bag of materials everyone created a work of art.” The prizes were announced at a
gathering at the Embellish Atelier hat store in Rozelle on September 1st and the winning pieces were displayed in the storefront window for the rest of the month. The People's Choice winner was decided subsequently by a public vote online.
