London
Hat Week
1–7 August 2022 by Elly Stemerdink
It might be hard to imagine now, but at the beginning of this year many organisers still faced uncertainty regarding the feasibility of their 2022 events because of restrictions that were still in place.
London Hat Week (LHW) organisers Georgina Abbott and Becky Weaver experienced that concern. In mid-March they could finally take the decision to go ahead, without

having to fear cancellation or postponement this time. Although the late decision meant that LHW22 was slightly smaller overall than some previous in-person occasions, this year’s edition included all the usual components such as the workshops, talks, demonstrations, supplier fair, exhibition, hat walk and party. Above all, though, LHW was another successful event, which offered visitors the opportunity to finally catch up again with many other (international) milliners.

Workshops, talks and presentations
Most of the 100-plus events were held at Morley College in south London. This specialist adult and further education centre offers a wide range of courses and qualifications, including higher education programmes in fashion and millinery. As such, one of the reasons why this venue was chosen was that it offered dedicated millinery and textile studios, which even had sewing machines. At previous locations, for example, using steam and water during workshops could often be problematic. Besides a wide variety of in-
person classes at Morley College and at milliners’ own studios, this year’s event also offered a whole range of workshops online. “Although we didn’t enjoy having to turn the 2020 edition into an almost completely online event, we also learned a lot from that experience,” said Becky. “Offering online workshops and talks was a necessity last time. But afterwards we received so much feedback from people who normally wouldn’t be able to join us in person to continue the online part that we kept it.”
