Tip!

Your iron will give off a burnt cake smell and you should also hear a hissing sound when pressed with a damp cloth.

03

Manipulating felt With your warm damp pressing cloth, place over the felt and gently press down on the cloth, making sure you do not touch the felt with the iron. There should be a great amount of steam produced. Lift off the iron then pull the felt from the top and the bottom of the hood and the felt should ‘give’. Stretch the felt in the opposite direction too.

TECHNIQUES

04

Continue stretching and pressing until the felt is wide enough and deep enough for your block or pattern. Block

one colour on the bandeau block and prepare a piece of felt covering the area of the block you want to cut and splice.

05

Designing the cut-out shape Your shape should be aesthetically pleasing to the shape of the hat or headdress/ block. In my case I have used the pattern from a tile I saw and adapted the shape by softening the edges for the halo crown.

06

Cutting the pattern Make several patterns to use on your felt. I make a few because sometimes they can get wet as you use them.

07

Cutting out the felt for the insert Pre-press the felt. Mark the design on both coloured pieces, using chalk for dark and a pencil for the lighter colour.

Tip!

Cutting the felt Use a scalpel to cut the excess felt away from the outline shape you have marked. Use a cutting mat for this.

08 09 Edges that don’t

Designer licence Work out what way you want to divide the colours in the formation you want. You will find that you will have two colourways available for you to use – this is where your design choice is needed.

quite fit can be cut and sanded off with a nail file.
