36 SHINING A SPOTLIGHT ON SUSTAINABILITY
The crucial issue of sustainability in the M&E industry is in focus throughout the IBC2022 content programmes. Global experts from across production, post-production and distribution are sharing their insight into the business benefi ts of transitioning to a net ero future and how people and technology can work together to optimise outcomes. The conversation starts in Room E102 today at 11:00 with a Technical Papers presentation entitled nergy-effi ciency for a More Sustainable Future. This informative and entertaining session will examine three very distinct approaches towards this objective. The fi rst, by a maor broadcaster, began as a means of exploring the economies of cloud- based working but soon became overtaken by the pandemic and home-based working. Now, post-pandemic, the organisation has been pervaded by a new culture of adventure and it has embraced this new way of working, with its very substantial energy savings. Another development describes the creation of an app that can predict the battery capacity required to watch HDR content, informing users how to choose energy-saving viewing options. Finally, the session will examine the novel principles employed in the design of a proactive smart home which takes account of the lifestyles and media usage habits of its inhabitants.
Stephan Heimbecher, Direktion Technik und Produktion, SWR; Tim Guilder, Head of Production Technology – UK at ITV Studios; Joe Newcombe, Media Technology Strategist, Microsoft UK; and Regina Bernhaupt, Director User Experience Research, ruwido Austria, will all be sharing their experiences. The role of the cloud in reducing a company’s impact on the environment is also up for discussion on the Content Everywhere Stage. Baillavoine, CEO, Quortex; and Jim Brickmeier, hief Product and arketing ffi cer, Velocix, will take part in a session exploring Environmental Sustainability And The Cloud’s Contribution To Tackling Climate Change. Finally today, Google will share its Net Zero Future For Broadcast in the Forum at 16:45. Jackie Pynadath, Director, Sustainability & Innovation, EMEA, Google Cloud, and Katy Kasmai, Senior Program Manager and Sustainability Lead, Google TV, will give data- driven insights into key sustainability indicators within the cloud supply chain and end-to-end of TV. This session will enable attendees to assess their own carbon footprint and next steps for greening their business. Saturday will see a focus on Sustainability In News Operations with Morwen Williams, Director of News Operations, BBC, and Lucy O’Brien, Global CTO, EMG Media, taking to the stage in Room E102 at 16:00. In addition, a trio of sessions on Monday 12 September will look at real-world change already having an impact.
At 11:30 on the Content Everywhere Stage, Guido Meardi, CEO & Co-Founder, V-Nova, will
offer a deeper look at the benefi ts delivered by Low Complexity Enhancement Video Coding, one of MPEG’s latest standards in MPEG-5 LCEVC and Sustainability in Streaming. This is followed at 12:15 in the Forum by Sustainability in Media: Is it real, or just the latest thing? Cedric Lejeune, CEO, orkfl owers arbara ange, , ibo Kristan Bullett, CEO, Humans Not Robots; Dom Robinson, Co-Founder, Director and Creative irestarter, idas and handi oni, reative Sustainableist, Creative Zero, will provide real- world examples of organisations taking the lead in implementing sustainability action plans. Those areas that require further understanding in terms of the true carbon cost all along the value chain will also be discussed. The fi nal sustainability-focused session takes place at 13:30 in the Forum. During Meet albert – How TV is Driving Sustainable Change, the albert team will discuss some of the projects and success stories and ask what the wider industry can continue to learn as we transition to a net ero society. FREE TRAVEL TO AND FROM IBC THROUGHOUT THE SHOW
IBC has partnered with transport operator GVB to give attendees a free transport pass for use throughout the show. Valid from 9-12 September inclusive, the pass allows travel on Amsterdam’s tram and metro network.
