s we’re preparing for the new working year we’re wondering: Covid, again? What challenges will this year bring? We are all hopeful for better times, although realistically we must plan for contingencies and accept and embrace the future. Our FCSI Asia Pacifi c

eople are the lifeblood of the foodservice industry and by its very nature,

eating has historically been a communal, shared experience. It is very fi tting that

this issue of Foodservice Consultant magazine revolves around the people of our industry. Over the last two years, we have all become accustomed to hearing about and seeing the fi rst-hand impacts that a disruption to foodservice workers can have.

Establishments in all

market segments are dealing with employees out sick, demanding higher wages, and even leaving all together for jobs in other industries. The consequences of this problem are having real impacts on the ability of establishments to stay open and provide the same quality of service that we enjoyed pre-pandemic. The foodservice design

fi rms, manufacturers, manufacturers’ reps, dealers,

and service agents are also dealing with many of the same issues that are plaguing the establishments themselves. I have talked to many channel partners over the last few months, and all seem to be running short staff ed, but are dealing with a very hefty workload.

The foodservice industry needs to take a collective look inward and determine how we recruit, train, and retain the future generation of workers.

The region has experienced signifi cant diff erences when dealing with the pandemic, but as I write, it seems that the EAME region is opening up again. We are all looking forward to spring, freedom and life in the new normal. The past two years have touched us personally in various ways. This period has also inspired me enormously

and brought me a lot of energy. I walked the Dutch coastal path from Den Helder to Hoek van Holland. I also cycled to Santiago de Compostela in Spain – the trip of a lifetime. Never in my life have I experienced so much hospitality and (re) discovered pure cuisine. I slept in monasteries, abbeys, in a tent in backyards and woke up every morning not knowing what the day would bring or where I would spend the night.

What I did know after arriving in Santiago de Compostela is that I want to inspire, coach and off er new energy to teams and individuals and for this I have developed a number of management development programs with my company REM&KO. I’d be happy to tell you more about it. For now, stay safe and I look forward to meeting you at our FCSI EAME conference in May 2022: #TACT 2022.
