Biggest dairy innovation since pasteurization


Australian company Naturo will launch its high-nutrient, high digestibility fresh milk products. It is processed without pasteurization, allowing for extended shelf life. It also tastes closer to the natural taste of milk. The patented Haelen method was invented by Naturo founder and CEO, Jeff Hastings, a qualified agricultural engineer with over 30 years’ experience in global agriculture. The Haelen method kills more pathogens than pasteurization, making it safer than traditional methods. It is the only method that is known to kill Bacillus Cereus, a common pathogen in milk. It preserves the natural goodness of milk that pasteurisation destroys. It has a 60-day shelf life when refrigerated, versus the 14-day shelf life of pasteurized milk. It can be shipped to parts of the world with no access to fresh milk.


Food waste leads the way for sustainable consumption and innovation


People are demanding action, especially with environmental issues. According to Mintel’s Global Food and Drinks Trends 2030 report, food waste has the led the way for sustainable consumption and innovation. For the past few years, food waste has been an actionable point for consumers and companies. One such company is Meadow Mushroom in New Zealand. It created a container made from organic mushroom stalks. The company has set a goal to be carbon neutral by reducing its carbon footprint and off- setting carbon emissions. Furthermore, it set a goal to reuse, recycle, and compost by 2025. It will ensure that all Meadow Mushroom products are packaged in sustainable packaging that’s either reusable, recyclable, or compostable. By moving away from using plastic punnets for packaging their mushrooms, they are able to eliminate the equivalent of 2.5 million drink bottles in just one year. Mintel sees an increasing trend in companies taking sustainable and innovation action such as this.

Non-alcoholic drinks producers lose tens of millions of dollars yearly to downtime


Australia has a growing demand for the non-alcoholic beverages such as non- alcoholic beer, Kombucha, ginger beer, coconut water and juices. A study by OFS, a manufacturing performance company found that non-alcoholic producers spend over half their time not producing. This includes 20 minutes of hourly downtime, resulting in producers missing out as non-alcoholic drink consumption surges. It also found that producers spend 58 minutes setting up a new production job, compared to the 49 minutes for craft beer producers. Research from OFS found that non-alcoholic producers spend more than 36 minutes every hour not filling up beverages. The industry risks missing out on booming market as non-alcoholic drink sales skyrocketed by 83% in the past year.
