Jack in the Box Inc. announced the acquisition of Del Taco Restaurants, Inc., for about $575m. Founded in 1964, Del Taco has approximately 600 restaurants across 16 states.
Focus Brands, the parent company of Auntie Anne’s®, Carvel®, Cinnabon®, Jamba®, McAlister’s Deli®, Moe’s Southwest Grill®, and Schlotzsky’s®, announced that it signed agreements for the most franchises in its history last year: 561 franchises. The company also opened more than 175 units in the US and Canada last year. Non- traditional restaurant expansion also played a major role in Focus Brands’ growth in 2021. Deals were signed to open future locations in convenience stores, airports, amusement parks, colleges and universities, ghost kitchens and more. Today, across the entire family of brands, there are 972 non-traditional units open throughout the US with an additional 270 units in the pipeline. This includes the recent opening of Jamba’s second robotic kiosk pilot, Jamba by Blendid, with more locations in the pipeline.
East Coast Wings + Grill will open another location in Virginia, thanks to a new partnership with franchisors Lisa and David Ware III.
Bay-Area emerging fast casual chain SAJJ Mediterranean announced a new partnership with ghost kitchen operator Kitchen United and grocery chain Kroger. SAJJ Mediterranean will be one of the first restaurant concepts to serve its food inside the Kitchen United MIX concept at Ralphs in Los Angeles near the UCLA Campus.
Papa John’s International announced a partnership with FountainVest Partners, one of Asia’s leading independent private equity firms, to open more than 1,350 new stores across South China by 2040.
Chipotle Mexican Grill opened another Chipotlane Digital Kitchen restaurant in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio earlier this year. The new prototype is smaller than a traditional location with no dining room access for guests or a front line. The kitchen is equipped with a make line dedicated to digital orders placed through the Chipotle app and
Chipotle.com, as well as marketplace partners. Guests and delivery drivers can collect their digital orders through the Chipotlane drive-thru or walk-up window. The new restaurant will also offer patio seating for guests to enjoy their meals. Since launching in early 2018, the Chipotlane format continues to enhance access, ease and satisfaction for guests while demonstrating strong performance. New restaurants featuring a Chipotlane open with approximately 15% higher sales compared to non-Chipotlanes opened during the same period.
Bojangles announced plans to expand throughout Texas after signing five multi-unit agreements to build 30 corporate-owned stores and 20 franchised locations in the greater Austin, Dallas/Fort Worth, Houston and San Antonio markets in the coming years.
