Peter Martin is a portfolio manager at Odey Asset Management, which he describes as ‘one of the only London hedge fund businesses to offer segregated portfolios to private clients. We therefore offer better execution and access to the market than wealth managers.’ The most pivotal moments of his


career have been founding two wealth management businesses and, more recently, setting up and offering a private client service from a hedge fund business. He believes the unique proposition has placed the firm in good stead to ‘offer good active management to clients’. He specialises in corporate clients, family offices, finance professionals, HNWs, institutional clients and ‘sophisticated investors’.


What is the biggest challenge in the wealth management sector? Spear’s asks Harry McGowan, a star portfolio director at Cazenove, who answers: ‘Managing clients’ expectations in an ever-changing environment.’ It’s been an age-old issue, especially since the 2008 financial crash, which showed that relationships built through clear communications are vital. Private client wealth is a


particularly dynamic landscape at the moment too, with issues such as market volatility, tax transparency, Brexit and US politics worrying HNWs. McGowan says opportunities abound, though, especially in Japan, elsewhere in Asia and in other emerging markets.

Francis Menassa – who worked at Merrill Lynch and Credit Suisse before founding his own wealth management firm - says that the JAR ethos is to treat clients like family. ‘We concentrate on the preservation of their wealth and its eventual transfer with the same sense of responsibility we have when we make decisions about our own families,’ he says. Now in his third decade in wealth


management, he lists his energy and drive as integral to his work and the success of JAR. ‘My colleagues tell me my energy is never-ending,’ he says. ‘And as silly as it sounds, you need energy to keep going.’ Focus is another essential element of Menassa’s outlook - as well as always having a clear process in mind.


‘My principal role is to provide the oversight to ensure our portfolios are meeting clients’ expectations,’ says Lothar Mentel, chief executive of Tatton’s investment management arm. The highly regarded fund manager knows what he’s talking about. Prior to joining Tatton in 2012, Mentel grew Octopus Investments – where he served as chief investment officer – to a £1.6 billion business. He now fulfils the dual role of heading Tatton IM and serving as chief investment officer to the wider group. He was attracted by Tatton’s mission to expand access to wealth management and its focus on both transparency and value for money. ‘Being well-off does not automatically make you financially literate,’ he adds.


Adviser profile Eoghain Murphy has more than 20 years of experience in the financial services industry and built a strong track record in assisting European private clients with their complex multi-jurisdictional banking, credit and investment needs. Murphy began his career as a Financial Adviser with Morgan Stanley in Chicago and New York and after 12 years as a Director of Barclays Private Bank, he was promoted to the top spot in Ireland in March 2019. The Head of Private Banking Ireland is a Qualified Financial Adviser (QFA) and sits on the Advisory Board for the Chartered Institute for Securities & Investments (CISI) Ireland and is a member of the Institute of Bankers in Ireland (IoB).
