A senior relationship manager with HSBC Private Banking’s investment platform, Nicholas Hender has grown the bank’s relationships with senior executives and entrepreneurs. Prior to this, he spent a decade at Barclays in both HNW wealth and investment management. Hender’s role at HSBC is all-encompassing, acting as a single point of contact for HNW individuals, businesses and families. ‘At HSBC, we believe private banking is at its best when clients have a relationship with a manager who knows them, their family and their business,’ he says, ‘ensuring that the products, services and advice they receive are coordinated with their personal circumstances.’

Nick says that his clients often draw on their own experience when it comes to alternative assets: entrepreneurs who have seen private equity at work in their own business are often interested to commit their own capital to further Private Equity investments. manager relationship can be rewarding. No two clients are the same, he says, and there is a lot he ends up learning from each individual experience. Attention to detail and ‘doing little things very well’ do pay off. ‘We are here to serve, and I think that is something that is often forgotten.’

Fred Hervey’s two decades in the wealth management world began at the British stockbroker, James Capel, which led to him advising clients and running a team at Barclays Wealth. He subsequently co-founded and ran the UK Private Bank for Berenberg. Now co-founder and CIO of Lincoln, Hervey describes the service he provides as ‘unconflicted wealth management advice that we would like to receive ourselves’. His team invests in ‘the very best opportunities for clients and ensures that all of our clients have the opportunity to participate if appropriate for them’. LPIO’s clients are generally sophisticated investors, so Hervey looks for more contrarian opportunities where appropriate.


Andrew Hess joined Close Brothers as managing director of its HNW bespoke investment management service in January 2019. ‘The main reason for joining was a strong global direct equity research capability, as well as the ability to continue to run bespoke portfolios,’ Hess explains. ‘This, combined with a low client


to investment manager ratio, enables us to provide a personal service to our clients.’ Hess joined the firm from Rathbones, where he worked as an investment director, and has more than 30 years of experience managing funds on behalf of private clients, pension funds, charities and City livery companies.

A partner and portfolio manager at James Hambro since 2013, James Horniman has been in fund management for over a quarter of a century, having worked previously for UBS and HSBC. ‘I enjoy the combination of client


service, and buying and selling shares,’ he tells Spear’s. ‘I also like the element of unpredictability; you never know what might be on your desk when you get in of a morning. It’s our job to bring it under control – it’s about controlling the risk for our clients.’ With new clients, he says the


firm’s approach is ‘practical’: ‘We say a million [as a minimum stake] because it’s a nice round number, but we’d never turn away someone with several hundred thousand.’


James Johnsen joined the investment world after a career in the military. The Old Etonian, who also has an MA in law from Cambridge, joined Church House in 2003 after holding positions at Merrill Lynch and Sotheby’s. Church House is a specialist fund


and portfolio management service catering to HNWs, financial professionals and institutions. ‘Investing money is not only about shares, bonds, funds and portfolios,’ it says. ‘It begins with getting to know you – your level of investment experience, investible wealth and preferred time horizon.’ The company also has


a multi-generational view when it comes to private wealth and takes pride in its independence.


Craig Lewis looks after Edmond de Rothschild’s key clients and family offices from its Monaco office. He says the business is five times bigger than a decade ago and has achieved organic growth with low staff turnover.
