When Philip Grindell retired from the police in 2019, he decided to set up Defuse to protect family offices, executive offices and high-profile individuals from physical, reputational and psychological harm. Grindell says he combines protective intelligence with behavioural science in order to not only keep his clients safe but also to eliminate the anxiety caused by intimidation and threats. Philip was personally brought into the UK Parliament following the death of Jo Cox MP during the extreme toxicity of the Brexit period. Tasked with protecting British MPs from threats, abuse and reputational harm he was responsible for identifying the indicators that prevented an attack on a serving MP. Philip remains the pro-bono security consultant to the Jo Cox Foundation and her family.

Following years of work with Members of Parliament and other high-profile individuals, there are few, if any, individuals in the country with the experience of Philip in this field of work. Philip utilises former researchers and analysts from counter- terrorism and British Intelligence together with a globally recognised stalking and behavioural psychologist and a key US forensic and national security psychologist with a specialty in threat assessment and the prevention of targeted violence. Philip isn’t just a highly sought-after subject matter expert in his field – he fully understands the challenges of those who live in the public spotlight and can handle the situations they face quickly, discreetly, and professionally. Jon Hill was appointed projects director at Polaris in 2010. He has deep experience in the field and has been commended for ‘offering a straightforward approach’. A premier provider of high-quality security services – including residential and yacht security, close protection, investigation and surveillance – Polaris is especially renowned for its bespoke security service for HNW clients, celebrities and royalty. While the company trains many of its operatives, it also employs former police and military protection, as well as surveillance and intelligence specialists. If the needs of the client supersede the services offered, Polaris works with external agencies – but only ever drafts in operatives the firm already knows and trusts.
First Neil Kirton was an investment banker, and now he’s a managing director of Kroll’s investigations and disputes department. It’s not quite ‘hunter’ to ‘hunted’, but it’s close. Kirton admits that now he can see both sides of the fence with regards to deals, and his investigations are coming earlier and earlier into the deal process – as is the need to gather information. He was a board member of Arbuthnot Banking group and CEO of its securities business before that, and ran various equities sales businesses for Bridgewell and Hoare Govett (which was bought by ABN Amro). His 40 years of experience in the investment banking world is obviously a big plus for Kroll and its clients, too.

Darren Matthews joined the K2 Intelligence team in 2010, moving across from a rival firm – and he hasn’t looked back since. ‘The philosophy of the company is providing quality work. This meant that, combined with some of the most skilled and experienced practitioners in the industry, the company offered a service to clients that its competitors could not rival or even offer.’
Since his arrival, he’s helped the company grow to cities like Geneva and Los Angeles, and has been able to help the group in its partnership with the NFL Players’ Association – the union for NFL players. K2 helps them with ‘social media intelligence, monitoring, and risk mitigation services’.
Mike O’Neill doesn’t see Optimal Risk as a security firm, but rather a ‘risk management’ company that helps clients looking for ‘discreet advice’ and support mitigating the risks of their lifestyle. Within the usual security offering there are also reviews of clients’ lifestyles, travel itinerary reviews, advice on social media use and security briefings to each member of the HNW family. ‘The amount of information now available via open source and social media can cause problems,’ he explains. ‘This might be unwelcome attention, or even targeted action against HNW families. It’s important to understand the “virtual footprint” that a family has, and what measures can be taken to minimise the risks.’
