Natural gas is almost entirely methane. Burners are therefore designed for the high calorific value (approximately 38 MJm-3) of this gas. The delivery pressure of natural gas is approximately 2 x 103 Pa (Nmv). Bottled gases liquify at a fairly low temperature and can be easily stored and transported in steel cyclinders. The principal gases used are propane (C3 H8) and butane (C4 H10).
The gas cylinders must always be used with a suitable pressure reducing valve and regulator which is available from the suppliers of the gas. The calorific value of propane is 93.2 MJm-3 and its normal delivery pressure is 3500 Pa (Nm-2).
Butane has a calorific value of 119.3MJm-3 and has a delivery pressure of about 2750 Pa (Nm-2). The Natural Gas Bunsen Burner burns approximately 108 litres per hour of natural gas.
The Bottled Gas Bunsen Burner burns approximately 144 litres per hour of bottled gas.
