In the study of radioactivity, student practicals are difficult to organise because of the hazardous nature of the topic, but this apparatus offers students the opportunity to obtain realistic results in a perfectly safe way. The student set contains 10 bowls and 500 small plastic cubes. The cubes have 1 face identified and represent radioactive nuclei which have “decayed” when this face is uppermost. 10 groups shake their set of nuclei and roll them out onto the bench. For each throw the decayed nuclei are

counted and removed from the set. Excellent results for an exponential decay cure are obtained with increased awareness of the link between activity and the number of nuclei present.

B. Alpha Scattering Apparatus (Analogue)
For demonstrating Rutherford scattering by means of a gravitational analogue of inverse law repulsion.
£81.02
The apparatus comprises a spun aluminium hill, a 12.5 and 19mm steel ball and a wooden launching ramp.
Hill, D280 x H60mm. The shape has been determined by varying its height above the base line by an amount based upon the reciprocal of the radius. Launching ramp, 300 x 50 x 110mm high with a guide groove down its curved front face and index marks at 40, 60, 80 and 100mm above the base to give a variety of known launching heights.
