allowing passengers to stream movies and/or go on social media. “The quality of food and beverage

in airports is also improving so there is more competition for shoppers’ attention.” Currently operating stores in

the Americas, Europe, Middle East and Asia Pacific, Kenny reveals he is ‘absolutely delighted’ with the shop in the new terminal at Muscat International Airport. Awarded the contract by Oman

Airports Management Company in 2016, the agreement covers the duty free and luxury retail concession. ARI provides core category duty free products in addition to luxury fashion & accessories, watches, toys and gourmet foods and confectionery. Kenny comments: “Muscat is

a joint-venture between our ARI Middle East division and Oman Air and the shop in the new terminal has transformed the passenger experience. “We are delighted with the design

and execution of the main shop which opened in March. Since then, we have opened a number of outlets

and sunglasses outlet is also on the agenda, according to Kenny. “There are lots of openings there. It is a fantastic terminal with a fantastic shop. It’s early days on the trading front, but we are satisfied with what we have seen so far. “Once all shops are open, we will see if our targets can be realised.”

Middle East division Regarding the Middle East division – which encompasses operations in Beirut, Bahrain, Muscat and Cyprus – a refurbishment of the Larnaca store is in the pipeline. Kenny adds: “It was a positive year

across all locations. They all traded above 2016. This was despite political tension in Beirut and general unrest in the region.” The decision to invest significantly

in departure shop renovations at Bahrain International Airport paid off through an increase in gross sales and operating profits. “Bahrain had a very good year

ahead of expectations,” remarks Kenny. “This was in part due to a very successful refurbishment project.” He adds: “The local team in

Bahrain, supported by ARIME’s central team did a fantastic job there in terms of the design and execution of the shop re-fit.” The business in Cyprus also

performed well despite pressure on passenger average spend. This was driven by a decline in Russian passengers and a weaker sterling. Elsewhere, ARI was extremely

busy in Canada – sales grew +11% year on year – where it was awarded the 7.5-year contract at Quebec City Jean Lesage International Airport in July. The contract, which began in

December 2017, sees the retailer sell souvenirs, watches, gifts, food and toys to international and trans- border passengers from its 400sq m store branded ‘The Loop Hors Taxes’. Quadruple the size of the previous

outlet, specifications have been updated in line with the tastes and needs of Quebec passengers. Luxury products such as make-up, perfume, sunglasses, accessories and wine & spirits are all available in-store. “We were really happy to secure

that project and contract,” recalls Kenny. “Canada is a really important location and market for us where we have been successfully operating since 1998. “Historically, we have been

operating there for quite some time, so putting another flag on the map was important from the point of view of consolidating our position.”

Canadian business Also present elsewhere in Canada (Montreal, Halifax and Winnipeg), the Quebec operation is testament to its reputation and presence across the country. “The objective is to keep delivering the ARI vision of providing the best customer service every time. “That is facilitated by the

strongly’ since ARI took over the contract, indicates Kenny. “There is a really good General Manager in Canada called Jackie McDonagh [TRBusiness March 2018 cover star], who has taken over in Montreal and seamlessly integrated Quebec into the overall Canada operation.” Last October also saw the official

unveiling of the renovated ‘The Loop Duty Free’ offer in Montreal. The store underwent an extensive remodelling process and expanded
