32 CHAPTER 8 QUESTION

1. What are three things that should be done to reduce communication barriers when preparing to interview a new client?

ANSWER

1. Use language tailored to the client’s understanding (i.e., use simple language and not jargon).

2. Eliminate distractions (i.e., turn off any loud noises in their room).

3. Be mindful of the client’s time and attention. Break longer sessions into shorter ones and come back when they are more alert and comfortable.

2. A menu includes: Pork stir fry, brown rice, sliced oranges, steamed broccoli, and low-fat milk. Which religions can eat what parts of this meal? If there is a religion that cannot eat a part of the meal, make one suggested substitute.

Pork Stir Fry: Most of these religions would not consume (Mormons, Jewish, Muslim, Hindu, or Buddhist). Christians could consume the pork stir fry, however, Catholics would avoid pork stir fry during lent. For all religions, vegetable stir fry with tofu would be acceptable.

Brown Rice, oranges and steamed broccoli are ok for all of the religions.

Milk: In the Jewish religion, milk and meat cannot be served at the same meal, so if beef stir fry was served, milk would not be consumed. However, if it was tofu stir fry, milk could be consumed as a beverage.

3. When considering cultural differences, plan a sample meal at the facility that would meet the preferences of all the following clients: Muslims, 7th Day Adventists, and Catholics on a Friday during Lent.

4. What types of communication may be beneficial when working with a cognitively impaired client? Why is it important to be culturally sensitive with nonverbal communication and what are two examples to be aware of?

Black Bean Burger on a whole grain bun, grilled Mediterranean vegetables, fruit salad, lettuce and tomato for the veggie burger and lemonade to drink.

With verbal communication, use these tips: speak slowly and clearly. Consider a quiet setting for good focus. Use simple language/wording and allow them adequate time to respond, as response time may be delayed. It may actually be better to use yes/no types of questions instead of open ended questions. Present or ask about one idea at a time. Utilize pictures or food models if and when necessary. If they are not cognitively aware or easily confused it may be beneficial to involve close family members or caregivers. It’s important to be aware of common gestures that may be offensive in other cultures. Two examples are: Thumbs up and the ‘ok’ signs are interpreted as an offensive gesture in countries like Iran and Afghanistan, and some South American countries.
