Progression of Learning - Land Drill


Skill-Based: Physical movements of focus skill. Instructor description:


Create “water traffic” cards that have the names of different boats (Power, Cruising Sailboat, etc) that they may come into contact with on the water. Set up two cones about 10 feet apart. Split the class in half and have them line-up by each cone facing, each other. Split the deck and have them each select a card and announce the type of boat and whether they are stand-on or give-way vessel in the scenar- io. Te students will approach one another on a collision course and either stand-on or give-way. Have student pick a new vessel card aſter 2-3 passes

Show colored sponges; set up 4 marks sailing area; describe how to enter and leave sailing area; describe how to pass sponge to next sailor.

Progression of Learning - Student Practice Rig and Sail out. On-Water Practice:


Stand on or not? Description:


Create a large box with four marks. Print pictures of different types of boats (Powerboat - red, Cruising Sailboat - green, etc.), and put each type on a color of construction paper and laminate, if possible. Have the students tape their boat card to the boom. Ten they can sail in the box and practice standing-on or giving-way to the other vessels. Students should hail “stand-on” or “give-way” on their approach.

60 On-Water Game: Tag you Stand on Description:


Get a pack of colored sponges (Powerboat - red, Cruising Sailboat - green, Kayak - Blue) Write the type of vessel on each sponge. Students will enter the box from opposing sides with their sponge and act as that vessel hailing “stand-on” or “give-way.” Tey then sail out of the box and toss their sponge to a different sailor.
