TEACHING BEGINNERS
Progression of Learning - Land Drill
Skill-Based: Physical movements of focus skill. Instructor description:
Set up a rigged boat secured on dolly on a reach course to keep boom out of the boat.
20-30 minutes
Activity-Based: Practice the water activities on land. Instructor description:
Ask students to form a straight line behind the instructor. Instructor walks a wide slalom path to simulate following the leader on the water while instructing students how to use a tiller to stay in line.
Instructor demo.
Sit in boat to demonstrate proper body position far enough forward, proper tiller position in front of torso with aſt hand, and proper mainsail grip with forward hand. Demonstrate tiller centered to steer straight and moving tiller smoothly side to side to turn. Demonstrate “tiller towards trouble” if trouble is on port side, starboard side, or straight ahead (just pick one).
Each student individually tries while instructor gives specific and constructive feedback.
