Progression of Learning - Land Drill


Skill-Based: Physical movements of focus skill. Instructor description:


Have each student sit in a boat at the dock or on a dolly and demonstrate proper body position, tiller placement, and mainsheet/jib positions for sailing downwind. Repeat the mechanics of downwind sailing - direction, sail trim, and steering.

Activity-Based: Practice the water activities on land. Instructor description:


Set up a right-triangle course with 3 marks on land, clearly identify where the wind is coming from, which is the windward mark, and which is the leeward mark. Have the students walk the course in pairs and at each mark ask the students to explain their points of sail and the correct trim for each leg.

Beginner Starboard Triangle Description:


Set up a right-triangle course with 3 marks. Have students sail downwind and jibe at the right-angle corner. Make the triangle big enough for all boats to sail course without overlapping each other. Make sure students adjust their sails, steering, and body weight to keep the boat balanced and under control.

90 On-Water Game: Capture the Floaties Description:


Using a variety of floating objects (balls, pool noodles, lifejackets, pool toys) toss the objects into the water downwind of the group of sailors. On the whistle have the sailors sail downwind and collect as many of the floaties as they can. Once all the objects are picked up, have the sailors sail back up to the starting area and repeat the game.

Tip: Set leeward mark slightly to leſt so the sailor will not accidentally jibe while sailing on a run. Te leeward mark can be moved inline with the windward mark as sailors get more comfortable sailing closer to dead down wind.
