Progression of Learning - Land Drill
Skill-Based: Physical movements of focus skill. Instructor description:
With a rigged boat secured on a dolly, have each student individually demonstrate how to get in and out of the Safety Position. *Use more than one demo boat for bigger groups.

Activity-Based: Practice the water activities on land. Instructor description:
Using marks, set up a rectangular zone on land (like you would on the water). Play red light (two short whistles) green light (one long whistle) in slow motion having the students wiggle their arms to demonstrate luffing when they’re in safety position on a close reach.
Instructor demo.
Demonstrate hand movements to slow down, go into safety position and then speeding up.
Each student individually tries while instructor gives specific and constructive feedback.
Instructor demo. Demonstrate playing Red Light, Green Light Class tries while instructor gives feedback.
Make sure you point out the boundaries of the game on the water (must stay inside four marks).

Use two marks set on a reach course. Students should sail between the two marks. As they approach the mark on a reach they need to slow down by easing the sail and go into Safety Position. Ten speed up and head back to the other mark.

• Use four marks to demonstrate the boundaries of the on water practice area. Make sure the sailing area is big enough for boats not to collide.
• One long whistle- yell “Green Light; Start Boat” • Two short whistles- yell “Red Light; Stop Boat in Safety Position”

SAFETY - Make sure you have another instructor or high-level student to co-teach with you if you are going to demo a skill away from your students safely. One person always needs to be with the class.
