Progression of Learning - Land Drill


Skill-Based: Physical movements of focus skill. Instructor description:


Place a rigged boat on a grass patch where it can pivot easily, could be leſt on a dolly if needed. Point the rigged boat into the direction of the wind or designated wind direction. Have each sailor hold the tiller and mainsheet standing next to the boat. Have the sailor move the tiller one direction or the other. Ten move the boat on the dolly the corresponding way. Have the sailor ease the sail until the instructor pivots the boat to a beam reach toward the same side the tiller is on. Hold the tiller over to one side, have the group count to 5. When the boat has turned and the boom is out over the water, then trim in and sail away.

Activity-Based: Practice the water activities on land. Instructor description:


Place marks on land and have each sailor walk up to the mark into the wind and go through the process of getting out of Irons as they are moving backwards.

SAFETY - Make sure you have another instructor or high-level student to co-teach with you if you are going to demo a skill away from your students safely. One person always needs to be with the class.

Progression of Learning - Student Practice Rig and Sail out. On-Water Practice:


Figure-8 + Individual Getting out of Irons practice


Description:


Set up figure-8 course for class containment, and one mark outside of the figure-8 a few boat lengths away. While students are doing the figure 8 drill, call over one student at a time to sail up to the mark, practice stopping into the wind, and getting out of Irons near the mark. Once out of Irons, the student can return to the figure 8 course.

90 On-Water Game: Irons to Go! Description:


When the instructor blows a whistle all the boats point into the no-go zone. Once all the boats have stopped, blow one whistle for right and two whistles for leſt and the sailors have to get out of the no-go zone to that side. Te first one to get their sailboat moving to the correct side wins the game.
