Have each student sit in a boat at the dock or on a dolly and demonstrate proper body, tiller extension, and main- sheet/jib positions for sailing upwind. Repeat the mechan- ics of upwind sailing - heading, trim-in, and steering.

Activity-Based: Practice the water activities on land. Instructor description:


Set up a triangle course with three marks, clearly identify where the wind is coming from and which is the windward mark. Have the student walk the course in pairs and at each mark ask the students to explain their points of sail and the correct trim for each leg.

Lesson Plan 7: Upwind Sailing On-Water Game: Sail a Serpent CORRECT Triangle Drill Description:


Set up three marks as a triangle. Have students sail around the triangle counterclockwise starting from the beam reach and check for proper sail trim. Make sure they adjust their sails, steering and body weight to keep the boat flat.


INCORRECT Description:


Students will join together into sailing “serpents” and adjust boat speed to stay connected.


1. Divide boats into equal-sized groups. 2. Choose a team leader who will begin as the serpent’s head. 3. Line up the other boats on the team behind the “head,” either by sail number or alphabetically by name.


4. Have each team sail across a designated area while remaining behind the leader.


5. Challenge the teams to create a serpent that stays together in the tightest line.
