Progression of Learning - Land Drill


Skill-Based: Physical movements of focus skill. Instructor description:


Two benches facing each other; tiller with extension; two pieces of line and a long thin object (to be the boom).


Ask two students to sit side by side on one of the benches as skipper and crew. Have another student hold the rudder at the back of the benches (stern of the boat) and hand the tiller extension to the skipper. Another student stands at the front of the benches holding the broom over the center of the boat to act as the boom. Both skipper and crew hold onto a piece of line to mimic holding a sheet. Ask the students to talk and enact the steps of a tack properly. Switch positions.

Activity-Based: Practice the water activities on land. Instructor description:


Water Drill Set Up on Land: two marks form a figure eight course perpendicular to the wind.


Have students walk through the figure 8 drill and note the steps of tacking together as a group.


Instructors position themselves upwind at a mark to assess each student.

If you have a co-instructor, one of you can demonstrate a tack on the water, while the other watches the class. Be sure to verbalize all 4 steps to tacking a double-handed boat.

SAFETY - Make sure you have another instructor or high-level student to co-teach with you if you are going to demo a skill away from your students safely. One person always needs to be with the class.

Progression of Learning - Student Practice Rig and Sail out. On-Water Practice:


Wind Finish Figure 8 Drill (45 min) Description:


• Students will sail a figure-8 tacking course on a beam reach.


Changing Sides


• Instructors post up around tack marks to coach through steps and keep a close eye on the potential collision zone in the center of the course.


• Students sail until each person completes three tacks successfully, then switch directions.


Preparation


• Use the verbal cues of prepare, turn, change sides and finish.

120 minutes On-Water Game: Tack Team 30 min Description:


Divide the boats into two teams (by colors, numbers, etc.) Each team tries to do the greatest number of correct tacks with a fun prize at the end!

Have students walk through the steps in tacking using marks on land. Students can be in a boat on a dolly to practice on land (best for younger sailors). If students are older and too big to practice in boats on land, have them practice walking through the motions of the tack while walking (“sailing”) the figure-8 course, using their arms to be sails.
