Goal(s) What do you hope to accomplish?
Demonstrate how to stop a boat in Safety Position on a close reach and restart a boat to get out of Safety Position on a reach.
Progression of Learning - Chalk Talk Purpose Value Statement: Explain why this focus skill will help connect to their sailing knowledge. Sometimes you need to safely bring your boat to a stop while sailing. Today we are going to practice starting and stopping our boats.

We have spent a lot of time talking about how to make our boat go, but how do we think we make it stop if we need to? What are some reasons you may need to stop your boat?
Content: Introduction:
Today we will learn how to control your boat speed and utilize the safety position in a single-handed boat. Tip: “When in doubt, let it out.” - If you get worried or feel like you are going too fast let the sail out.
Talking points with details: Tere are three main strategies for beginners to control their boat speed.
Step 1 - Slow Down: • Let it Out - Grab the mainsheet and let it out. You will see the sail get further and further away from you. • Lose Power - As the sail eases the boat will lose power and slow down.
Step 2 - Go into Safety Position: • Look Around - First identify the wind direction and check your surroundings for other boats and hazards. • Adjust Course - Steer to a close reach course, ease your sails, and allow them to luff completely.
• Lose Power - With all the wind spilled out of the sails, the boat will glide to a stop with the boom safely off to the side of the boat..
• Balance - Adjust your body weight and use small tiller movements to keep the boat flat and on course.
Step 3 - Speeding Up: • Trim In - Grab the mainsheet and pull it towards you using hand over hand. • Check the Sail - Your sail should begin to fill with the wind and stop luffing. • Adjust Course - Moving the tiller towards you slightly to turn the boat away from the wind.
