Students will execute a safe and controlled departure from the dock and landing back on the dock considering wind speed, wind direction, current, and traffic on the water.

Content: Introduction:
Now that you have learned to rig, launch, and board your boat, let’s plan for a safe departure and landing from the dock.
Talking points with details:
Departure: • Prepare to Depart - Check the wind speed, wind direction, current, and traffic on the water. • Depart - Slowly steer away from the dock and trim sails when clear.
Landing: • Prepare to Land - Check the wind speed, wind direction, current, and traffic on the water. • Land - Approach with sails luffing and stop within one boat length of the landing area.

Draw your specific departure and landing area on the white board. Have students come up to draw the departure and landing path for the wind direction that day.
Supporting Text: Steps for Leaving the Dock:
1. Pull rigged boat alongside dock. 2. Step carefully into the boat (NO jumping!) 3. Check surroundings and detach bowline from the dock 4. Begin to backwind or drift downwind away from the dock 5. Tiller pointed in the direction you want the bow to turn 6. When safely away from the dock a. Trim sails b. Aim boat where you want to go
