TEACHING BEGINNERS

Scope and Sequence Overview There are components of the Small Boat Student Curriculum Scope & Sequence that you will need to understand: Phases, Focus Skills, and Skill Evaluation Checklists.

E A Phase is a set of Focus Skills defined by a specific category. For example, the Phases that are used include Safety, Phase 1 through 3 of Sailing Skills, Theory, and Knots.

E A Focus Skill is a targeted skill that a student can complete by demonstrating all the components of the Skill Evaluation Checklist.

E The Skill Evaluation Checklist is the observable and measurable knowledge sailors will need to demonstrate that indicates completion of the Focus Skill within the Student Level. For example, in Beginner Sailor Phase 1 Sailing Skills, the Focus Skill “Understanding Wind” outlines the following Skill Evaluation Checklist: “Identify the wind direction; Identify two wind indicators on water; Identify two wind indicators on land.”
