ASHES TO ASHES

It may be macabre to some, but the “memorial diamond” burial trend is fast becoming the ultimate in upcycling. Instead of storing a deceased loved one’s ashes in an urn or sprinkling them outside, you can have their precious remains pressure-formed into diamonds of all sizes, cuts and colours. There are at least five companies offering this service

around the globe. One of the industry leaders, Algordanza, is based in Switzerland and reportedly sold nearly 1 000 corporeal gems in 2016. Visit: www.algordanza.com

GRUB’S UP!

We take a look at three of SA’s best eco-friendly restaurants:

THE TABLE AT DE MEYE, STELLENBOSCH, WESTERN CAPE Located on a wine farm, The Table offers much more than just a good meal. It designs a weekly menu based on what’s available in the garden, while all other ingredients – such as pasture-raised meat, farm eggs, olive oil and cheese – are sourced locally. The three-course lunch menu is served family-style on mismatched antique platters. Visit: www.thetablerestaurant.co.za

THE CORNER CAFÉ, GLENWOOD, DURBAN This funky eatery serves fresh, organic food and aims to have as little environmental impact as possible. All meals and drinks are served on re- usable crockery and there are no plastic straws, plastic bags or paper towels. It recycles 90% of its waste, all cleaning agents are dolphin-friendly and excess kitchen scraps are fed into the wormery, which feeds the garden. The outdoor area is ideal for breakfast, lunch or a delicious coffee. 197 Brand Rd, Glenwood, Durban. Tel: 031 201 0219.

IL CONTADINO, PARKTOWN NORTH, JOHANNESBURG Inspired by “peasant” food from the Spanish, French and Italian countryside, this restaurant personifies the spirit of season-focused cuisine. The ingredients for the simple, rustic meals are all sourced from the owner’s family farm in Magaliesburg. Patrons can enjoy scrumptious dishes such as roast chicken, slow- cooked pork, charcuterie boards, salads, homemade pasta and pizza from the in-house wood-fired oven. 19-4th

Ave, Parktown North. Tel: 010 900 1363.
