FOUNDATION GIVES 10 GRANTS FOR

RETURN OF A RACING LEGEND Racing fans will be delighted that Toyota’s brought back the GR Supra Racing

Concept, reviving the name and spirit of the most celebrated model in its illustrious sportscar heritage

The GR Supra reappeared at the Geneva Motor Show, carrying a name synonymous with power, performance and handling for a quarter of a century in cars that dominated Japan’s top- level GT racing series. It was last produced 16 years ago, but was

never forgotten, having starred in the first The Fast and the Furious action movie. The new two-door GR Supra Racing Concept has a front- engine/rear-wheel drive configuration and uses advanced lightweight materials in its construction.

HYDROGEN RESEARCH The Toyota Mobility Foundation

has given grants to 10 researchers working on innovative solutions using hydrogen

The foundation’s hydrogen research initiative aims to help reduce carbon dioxide emissions or create cheaper hydrogen systems, working towards a “hydrogen society” running on green-energy networks. It received 32 applications and a panel of energy experts from universities and public research organisations selected the final grant awardees.

DEALING WITH DISASTERS A disaster management system using

big-data analysis and the Internet of Things is being established with Toyota’s help

BELLS AND WHISTLES FOR ETIOS Etios is one of the zippiest performers in its segment – and it’s about to

get better…

Following the trend of individuality and buyers’ need for more expressive personal transport, the limited-edition Etios Sport features a striking bi-tone colour scheme. The black roof and pillars are paired with either Glacier White or Retro Red lower-body finishing to make the Sport stand out from the rest of the range. Complementing the contrasting two-tone arrangement is a black radiator grille, black exterior mirrors and black treatment for the rear-roof spoiler. The Sport model is available exclusively in hatchback guise. Upgrades to the entire range include a new Optitron instrument cluster, providing information to the driver with greater resolution and clarity. A new digital-sweep tachometer is positioned on the left, with a full-sweep speedometer completing the gauge layout. The entry-level Xi model receives an additional upgrade in the form of power windows in the rear – now providing motorised window operation right around. The Etios range remains a staple in Toyota SA’s passenger vehicle stable, averaging around 1 000 sales per month.

Probe data obtained from Toyota’s connected cars, such as information on outside air temperature and visuals of the state of traffic, will be combined with demographic movement data, weather information and data from disaster monitoring sensors to enable local authorities to monitor extensive infrastructure in real time. This will help them ascertain things like where passable roads are to boost the accuracy and speed of evacuation warnings, traffic control and ensuring the safety of residents. The system will also allow smartphones to be used as mobile sensors to enhance the data-gathering.
