The top-end South African art market is worth around R5,5 billion. According to the AfrAsia Bank SA Wealth Report 2018, African fine art prices have increased by 28% over the past 10 years and are expected to continue rising. South African artist Irma Stern’s expressive and modernist
portraits have made her the country’s most valuable artist, with the cost of a painting averaging around R5 million. She set a South African record when her piece, Arab Priest, sold for R34 million at Bonham’s in London in 2011. Other high-selling artists include Maggie Laubser, who
currently fetches up to R5 million per painting, with an average price of R600 000 and JH Pierneef, who fetches up to R20 million per work, with an average price of R800 000 per painting.

GEARED FOR GREEN
Tyre manufacturer Goodyear is putting the “g” into “green” with its new tyre prototype called Oxygene, which helps clean the air as you drive. The design integrates living moss on its sidewall, which absorbs carbon dioxide and turns it into clean oxygen through photosynthesis. The wheels are 3D-printed out of recycled tyres and it houses technology intended to increase the safety of pedestrians. Visit:
